“What is Needed for a Chain of Custody?”
The presentation will provide the evolution, use and purpose of the Chain of Custody Form.
The chain of custody form has evolved over the years. The most common us, today, is for tracking the sample from the field to the laboratory. The laboratory must determine if the sample data is to be used in litigation which requires more stringent legal chain of custody or use in regulatory or other applications. Legal chain of custody requires, not only the samples be tracked, but also all records of the laboratory must be tracked. The safeguards ensure there is no tampering of the records or the samples. Most labs do no perform legal chain of custody but use what is sometimes referred to as “trust” custody or sample tracking.
This presentation addresses the following:
- purpose of the chain of custody
- minimum requirements for PA and TNI
- additional requirements for PA and TNI
- drinking water requirements
- how to handle problems with sample documentation
- lack of documentation or changes to the documentation
- tips for storage, electronic records, and other items
